Shanghai Metro Operator Adds More Trains

The metro operator, Shanghai Shentong Group, is busy adding new trains to increase the Metro’s limited capacity.

Eighteen seven-carriage trains, which can each carry more than 2,100 passengers, are expected to be added to Line 8 by the end of the year.

One of them has already arrived but the Metro authority is still testing it, officials said yesterday. At the moment 24 trains run on the line.

75 minutes to travel from Shanghai to Nanjing

The Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed railway, which will cut travel time to 75 minutes, is set to open in July, Wenhui Daily reported today.
Currently it takes at least 120 minutes to travel from Shanghai to Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, by train.
The train will reach speed of over 300 kilometers per hour.
Construction started in July last year on the 300km rail line, which will cost 39.46 billion yuan(US$5.77 billion).

Hongqiao rail station ahead of schedule

The steel structure of a railway station in the Hongqiao Integrated Transport Hub is expected to be completed by the end of next month, a month ahead of schedule, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said yesterday.

Meanwhile, construction of an elevated road connecting the transport hub with downtown will start next month and should be completed in time for the 2010 World Expo.

Beijing Olympic Forest Park to open

The north park of the Beijing Olympic Forest Park will finally open to visitors on October 1 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, the Beijing News reported Wednesday.

The whole Park, including the north and south parts, will be open to visitors free of charge for the national holiday week that begins on October 1. After October 8, visitors will then have to pay a small fee to get in.
